Contactless Payments Acceleration Strategy

Context and challenge
The adoption of contactless payments — by card and digital wallets — faces different challenges in each region and country. Paying contactless means more security for the user and for the whole ecosystem, but in Mexico this transition is still challenging: it is a complex ecosystem, with more than 40 acquirers, 20 issuers and 3 processing switches.
Pratika’s challenge was to build an action plan capable of reaching the defined budget targets, based on a deep immersion in data and a significant number of interviews and field visits.
What we did
- Immersion in the ecosystem, with more than 30 interviews with industry leaders and analysis of databases with more than 120 million transactions
- Diagnosis of barriers by ecosystem layer
- Mapping of the acquirers, retailers, categories and merchant chains with the greatest activation potential
- Construction of an action plan prioritized by impact, with defined governance for execution
Result
A robust action plan prioritizing 4 acquirers — representing 75% of all transactions — and 30 retail chains totaling more than 45,000 points of sale identified across the country. This selection represents 10% of all merchant volume, defined for joint action with Pratika’s support during implementation.
